Daddy~Daughter Dance is Saturday

It’s time to get WILD . . . ABOUT YOU! Beta Sigma Phi’s fourth annual Daddy~Daughter Dance, ‘Wild About You”, is set for this weekend, Sat., Feb. 29, according to Gena Fletcher.

The dance will be held in the Lindsay School Cafeteria, and lasts from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The Cafeteria is located at the corner of S.W. 8th and Creek Streets in Lindsay.

All Pre-K thru 12th grade girls are welcome to attend with their Dad or Father figure, and dance the night away! This is a chance for the girls to get all dolled up, and their dads or father figures should dress to impress her. 

“This is a night of dancing, having fun, and making memories. We hope you’ll plan to attend this event with your daughter,” Ms. Fletcher added.

Refreshments will be served.  

Reservations aren’t required, but are appreciated. There is an entry fee for each Daddy/Daughter couple, plus a fee for each additional daughter.

Railroad crossing in Pauls Valley to close

The Garvin County Commissioners’ office in Pauls Valley has sent notification that the railroad crossing at Grant and Santa Fe in Pauls Valley, next to the Train Depot will be closed through the end of the week of February 28.

Info offered for Tuesday’s election

Voters will go to the polls Tues., Mar. 3 for the 2020 Presidential Preferential Primary (PPP), according to County Election Board Secretaries. 

Voters are asked to keep the following information and tips in mind as the election approaches.

– Early voting will be available at the County Election Board office from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thurs., Feb. 27 and Fri., Feb. 28. Sat., Feb. 29, early voting will be from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tues., Mar. 3. Lines are possible at peak voting times. Wait times will likely be shortest at mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Anyone in line to vote at 7:00 p.m. will be allowed to cast a ballot.

– Anyone who needs to look up their polling place, verify their registration information, or view a sample ballot can do so online. The Online Voter Tool can be accessed on the Oklahoma State Election Board’s website: http://www.elections.ok.gov. Those who vote by mail can also check the status of their ballot using the Online Voter Tool. Sample ballots are also available at the County Election Board office.

– Oklahoma law requires every voter who votes in person at the precinct polling place or during early voting at the County Election Board to show proof of identity before receiving a ballot. There are three ways for voters to prove their identity under the law (only one proof of identity is required): Show a valid photo ID issued by federal, state, or tribal government; or show the free voter identification card issued to every voter by the County Election Board; or sign an affidavit and vote a provisional ballot. (If the information on the affidavit matches official voter registration records, the ballot will be counted after Election Day.)

– Physically disabled voters who cannot enter the polling place, need help marking their ballots, blind or visually disabled voters and illiterate voters may be assisted by a person the voter chooses. In all cases, a person providing such assistance may not be the voter’s employer or an agent of the employer or an officer or agent of the voter’s union. A person providing assistance also must swear or affirm that the voter’s ballots will be marked in accordance with the voter’s wishes. Alternatively, all blind, visually impaired, and physically disabled voters may use the audio-tactile interface (ATI), a feature offered on all Oklahoma voting devices, to vote privately and independently, either at the County Election Board during early voting or at their assigned polling place on election day.

– Voters who have moved since the last election, but who have not transferred their voter registration to their new address, may do so on Election Day by going to vote at the polling place where their registration has been in the past. While voting, they may fill out a form instructing the County Election Board to transfer their registration to the new address before the next election.

– Those who became physically incapacitated after 5:00 p.m. Tues., Feb. 25 still can request an emergency absentee ballot. Those who might qualify for an emergency absentee ballot should contact the County Election Board office at             405-527-3121 as soon as possible for more information.

– Any violation of election law will be reported to the proper law enforcement authorities. Electioneering is not allowed within 300 feet of a ballot box. It is also unlawful to remove a ballot from the polling location, possess intoxicating liquors within half a mile of a polling place or to disclose how you voted while within the election enclosure.

The Grady County Election Board office is located in the District Attorney Complex at 307 W. Pennsylvania Ave. in Chickasha.

Revival continues at Lindsay First Baptist

Revival continues tonight, Wed., Feb. 26, at the First Baptist Church of Lindsay, according to Cindy Flood.

Dr. Hance Dilbeck is the speaker. The music is a mix of traditional and contemporary.

Lunch and a short devotional will be provided at 12:00 noon. Revival service begins at 7:00 p.m.

Clothes closet is open in downtown Lindsay

The Erin Springs Baptist Church clothes closet has a new location! It is now open in downtown Lindsay, at 219 S. Main, according to Brenda Morrow.

The clothes closet will be open Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.

“Spread the Love” food drive continues

The Delta Community Action Foundation, Inc. is calling on the public to help “Spread the Love” during the month of Febrtuary, according to Becky Deaton.

“Delta is having a peanut butter and jelly food drive to help local citizens in need of food,” explained Ms. Deaton.Donations can be dropped off at the following Delta Community Action locations:

Lindsay:  308 S.W. 2nd

Purcell:  122 W. Main

Pauls Valley:  225 W. McClure

Shirley’s clothes closet temporarily closed

The Erin Springs Church of God’s clothing closet, also called Shirley’s Closet, is being reorganized, and will be closed for a couple of months, according to Linda Brothers.

“Please watch the Shopper in the coming months. We’ll announce it here when we reopen,” Ms. Brothers added.

Cattlemen’s Leadership Academy applications available

The Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) is currently seeking applicants for the Cattlemen’s Leadership Academy (CLA) program. 

“The CLA program develops OCA members, between the ages of 25 and 40, through industry exposure, education and association communication,” said Mike Weeks, OCA President. 

CLA consists of a series of four seminars totaling 10 days over the course of one year. The seminars are designed to expose participants to leaders from all segments of the industry and opportunities to further explore our business, gain essential information, cultivate leadership skills and network with fellow OCA members.

“This program helps identify and develop young cattlemen willing to take a leadership role and carry out the OCA’s vision – Leadership that serves, strengthens and advocates for the Oklahoma cattle industry,” Weeks said. 

20 Applicants will be chosen to be part of CLA, class 28. OCA membership is required at the time of application. Additional applicant requirements, session dates and the electronic application can be found at http://www.okcattlemen.org. The application deadline is Fri., May 1.

“The popularity of the program increases each year,” said Weeks. “Our CLA program is highly respected across the nation. Several states are modeling their young leader programs after OCA’s CLA. If you want to be more involved in the OCA, stay up on current industry issues and take a leadership role in charting the course for a successful Oklahoma beef industry in the years ahead; I encourage you to apply today.”

Indian taco dinner set Sunday in Lindsay

The Lindsay Rainbow Assembly will be holding an Indian taco dinner on Sun., Mar. 1, from noon until 1:30 p.m., according to Theresa Bevers.

The dinner will be held at the Lindsay United Methodist Church, located at 114 W. Chickasaw in Lindsay.

The meal will include an Indian taco, dessert, and drink.

American Legion meets first Tuesday monthly

The American Legion, Ball-Smith Post 23, in Lindsay, meets the first Tuesday of every month, according to Bill Walker.

The meeting starts with a 6:00 p.m. potluck dinner, followed by the 7:00 p.m. meeting.

Bluegrass Gospel concert/jam set Sat., Feb. 29

The Greater Oklahoma Bluegrass Music Society (GOBMS), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, presents its Fifth Saturday Bluegrass Gospel Concert and Jam Sat., Feb. 29, at 6:30 p.m., according to Ronna Monse.

This event will be held at the Oklahoma Country-Western Museum & Hall of Fame, located at 3925 S.E. 29th in Del City.

  Jamming rooms are available for musicians who wish to jam. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. Jamming is from 5:00 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. 

Featured bands are Red River Reunion from Mesquite, Texas, Vintage Voices from the Oklahoma City area, and Garland Blocker & Blue Tradition from Seminole.  

There is a general admissions fee for adults. Children 12 and under are admitted for FREE, but must be accompanied by a parent or adult. Seating is provided and concessions are available. No outside food or drinks are allowed. 

Church/Senior/other groups of 10 or more receive a reduced rate. Bus drivers are admitted without charge.

The Museum & Hall of Fame is an air-conditioned, handicapped accessible, smoke-free facilty, and no drugs, alcohol or tobacco products of any kind are permitted.

Taco baked potato dinner set in Maysville

A taco baked potato dinner is set for Sun., Mar. 8 at the Assembly of God Life Center in Maysville, according to Ms. Linda.

The dinner will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. This is a fundraiser, by donation only. All proceeds go to help the kids of the church have a great Vacation Bible School.

OKDHS launches self-service website

Oklahoma Human Services (OKDHS) has announced a new website for child support customers. At http://www.okbenefits.org, Oklahomans can apply for child support and view extensive information about their cases.

The site is the first piece of a multi-year plan to replace outdated OKDHS case management systems. The plan is called the OK Benefits Program.

“Digital transformation is essential to Oklahoma becoming a top 10 state,” said Secretary of Digital Transformation and Administration David Ostrowe. “The OK Benefits Program is looking to modernize anything that touches citizens. We’re looking at how we provide information to families so that they can achieve or maintain self-sufficiency, and we’re putting it all in one place at http://www.okbenefits.org.”

At launch, visitors to http://www.okbenefits.org can:

• Complete and submit child support applications online and upload supporting documents

• View:

• Status of a pending child support application

• Child support hearing and appointment dates, times,    and locations

• Child support payments by case

• Child support due across cases for noncustodial    parents

• The status for each child support case

• Child support payment options

• Office address and hours for each Child Support    case

Later this year, http://www.okbenefits.org will add more services from Adult and Family Services, Child Support Services, and Child Welfare Services, the agency’s three largest divisions. As a thoroughly modern site, it supports current browser technologies including Chrome and Safari, but it does not support less secure legacy browsers like Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Child Support Services collects nearly $1 million dollars a day for almost 200,000 Oklahoma families. Before now, most interactions with the program had to be in person, on the phone, or by mail. Child Support Services recovers state funding spent on public assistance and prevents the need for assistance for many families.

“The OK Benefits Program reflects our ongoing commitment to improving safety, health, independence and productivity in Oklahoma. It showcases our True North customer focus by modernizing processes and improving service” said Justin Brown, director of OKDHS. “This website will quickly become the public’s doorway into many of the services we provide that improve outcomes for children and families.”

Sabra Tucker will be the featured speaker at the Garvin County Retired Educators Association meeting this morning, Wed., Feb. 26, according to Terry Ann Pitmon.

The meeting will begin at 10:00 a.m., and will be held at the Pauls Valley Chamber of Commerce meeting room, at 112 E. Paul Avenue in Pauls Valley.  

Ms. Tucker is Executive Director of the Oklahoma Retired Educators Association.
