Lindsay Ag Boosters cake auction/bbq set

It’s here! Yes! THE social event of the season – the annual Lindsay Ag Boosters cake auction and buyers’ appreciation barbecue – is happening this weekend, Sat., Aug. 17, according to event organizers.

The popular event follows the close of the fall fair, featuring Lindsay’s youngsters involved in 4-H and FFA. The fair is held Saturday morning at the Fair Barn, located on the west side of Hwy. 76N in Lindsay. 

The cake auction and buyers’ appreciation barbecue will be held at the REC Multi-Purpose Building, located on Hwy. 76N in Lindsay.

The free BBQ meal includes Smokin’ Joe’s ribs, brisket and the fixins, and will be served at 6:00 p.m. The cake auction will begin at 7:00 p.m. 

All funds raised from this event will go toward furthering opportunites for the youth in Lindsay FFA and 4-H. The money goes directly to funding the awards and premiums at the fall and spring shows, and to share expenses at camps, contests, leadership trips, scholarships and fair barn renovations.

All-school reunion set Sat., Aug. 24 for Pernell

Pernell’s all-school reunion is set for Sat., Aug. 24, at the Elmore City First Baptist Church in Elmore City, according to Jeanie Speakman Price.

“We will be honoring the class of 1969. We’ll also be remebering all of those we have lost this past year,” Ms. Price added.

Dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m. Meat and drinks are provided, and everyone is asked to bring a dish of their choice.

“After dinner, there will be prizes for many events that you may have been in,” Ms. Price went on to say.

“Everyone is invited to come. If you went to school there, taught there, drove a bus, and anyone who lived there when school was in session, and you loved Pernell, come on and enjoy,” Ms. Price continued.

“It will be an exciting time for all who attend. Much preparation has gone into this reunion, so come on, Longhorns, and enjoy this reunion,” Ms. Price concluded.

Party in the Park set for this Saturday

It’s time for the last Party in the Park of the summer! Sat., Aug. 17 is date for this popular, family-oriented event, put on throughout the summer by the Lindsay Chamber of Commerce and PASS Coalition. That’s the word from to Violet Henderson, Lindsay Chamber of Commerce manager.

Events kick off at 6:00 p.m. There will be lots of fun and games, along with a chalk contest, musical hoops, volleyball, relay races, corn hole tournament and more.

“Come join us for a night of fun, and stay for the FREE movie, Steve Carell’s “Despicable Me” with FREE popcorn and s’mores.

Party in the Park is held in Lindsay’s Shady Grove Park, located at the corner of S.W. 4th and Apache. The main entrance is located in the 800 block of S.W. 4th St.

PASS Prevention Coalition is a non-profit organization geared toward keeping communities away from drugs.

Drive safely – most schools start this week

School days are here! Most schools in the Shopper’s distribution area begin the 2019-2020 school year this week, and drivers are advised to be extra cautious in the days ahead. Kiddos may not be aware of cars and trucks on the roadways.

The Lindsay Leopard kiddos head back to school on Thurs., Aug. 15.

Maysville Warrior kiddos begin school Thurs., Aug. 15.

Dibble Demon kiddos start back to school on Thurs., Aug. 15. 

Elmore City/Pernell Badger kiddos start back to school on Thurs., Aug. 15. 

Alex Longhorn kiddos head back to school on Tues., Sept. 3.

Memorial set for Leland “Bubba” Shumate

A memorial service is set for Leland “Bubba” Shumate of Bradley, according to Todd Taylor.

Mr. Shumate passed away on June 9, 2019 at the age of 57. 

The service in remembrance of Mr. Shumate’s life will be held at the Bradley Community Center in Bradley from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sun., Aug. 18.

 

Area church set to hold Dinner Before the Big Game

Calvary Baptist Church of Lindsay is set to host a fundraiser dinner before the first game of the Leopards’ football team on Fri., Aug. 30, according to a news release.

The church will be serving BBQ sandwich dinners from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the vacant lot west of the Ryan Taylor-Dutton Family Museum, at the corner of S.W. 7th and Cherokee in Lindsay.

Everyone is invited to stop by on their way to the game, as the Leopards take on the Pauls Valley Panthers in their home opener. 

There is a charge for the dinner, and all proceeds go toward building the church’s Family Life Center. Those who have questions may contact Calvary Baptist Church at 405-756-2781.

 

Special meeting set for Purdy Cemetery Association

The board of the Purdy Cemetery Association will hold a special meeting on Tues., Sept. 3 at 7:00 p.m., according to LaVern Russell.

The meeting is to discuss the Salt Water Disposal Well to be built next door to the Purdy Cemetery. 

The meeting will be held at the Erin Springs Baptist Church fellowship hall, located at 3053 Hwy. 76 in Lindsay, or one-and-a-half miles south of Lindsay on Hwy. 76

Members of the Purdy Cemetery Association are invited and encouraged to attend.

Food and fun are available at Senior Center

Seniors, ages 60 and over, are invited to have lunch Monday through Friday at the Lindsay Senior Nutrition Center. That’s the word from site manager, Kelly Riddle.

“We have a variety of wonderful food. Mondays after lunch, we play Bingo with prizes. Almost daily, some people stay and play Dominoes,” Ms. Riddle went on to say.

“If you would like to join us, or if you know someone who could use our delivery service, give us a call. We would love to see you,” Ms. Riddle added.

The Lindsay Nutrition Center is located at 310 W. Choctaw in Lindsay, and serves lunch meals Monday through Friday.

Singing set at God’s Big Country Church

God’s Big Country Church in Blanchard is set to hold their monthly old-fashioned Country Gospel singing on Sat., Aug. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at God’s Big Country Church in Blanchard, according to Pastor Jerry Auld.

“Everyone is invited to our gospel singing. Bring your instruments, and bring a song,” Pastor Auld went on to say. “We’ll have food and fellowship after the singing.”

Sunday morning services begin at 10:30 a.m. every Sunday. Wednesday night services begin at 6:30 p.m., with Bible study and fellowship. All services are held at the church, located at 2215 County Road 1350 in Blanchard.

LHS band booster meeting set in Lindsay

The Lindsay High School (LHS) band boosters will hold their first meeting of the year on Mon., Aug. 19, according to a news release. 

The meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m., and will be held in the Band Room, located at the corner of S.W. 9th and Creek Streets in Lindsay.

Anyone who wants to support the band is welcome to attend. 

 

LHS Band set to hold ice cream social/preview

The Lindsay High School (LHS) Band is kicking off the school year and football season with an ice cream social on Tues., Aug. 20 at 6:00 p.m., according to a news release.

The LHS Band will also play their music from this year’s half-time show. 

These fun events will take place at the football field on the south side of the Lindsay School campus. Everyone is welcome.

 

Family plots need attention in Purdy

The Board of the Purdy Cemetery Association.

are asking familys who have marked plots at the Purdy Cemetery to re-mark their burial plots that they’ve already requested, according to LaVern Russell,

Markers need to be raised, “due to ground sinking from weather. We also ask that the user’s name be applied to the markers,” Ms. Russell added.

Dept. of Veteran Affairs rep to be in Lindsay

The Oklahoma Department of Veteran Affairs will have a representative at the Lindsay Community Library the second Tuesday of every month, according to Brenda Norrell.

The representative will be at the Library from 9:00 a.m. until noon, and will help Veterans with claims, benefits, and any questions they may have.

The Lindsay Community Library is located at 112 W. Choctaw in Lindsay.

Lindsay Senior Center offers Bingo

“Come on down to the Lindsay Senior Citizens Center and enjoy playing Bingo with us!” That’s the word from Center director, Kelly Riddle.

Bingo is offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Small prizes are awarded to the winners.

The Lindsay Senior Citizens Center serves the noon-day meal on weekdays at the center, and also offers home delivery in the Lindsay area, as well.

Everyone is welcome to attend. The Center is located at 310 W. Choctaw in Lindsay. Those who have questions may contact Ms. Riddle at 405-756-4780.
